2002 JAN 17 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Patients who undergo surgery for ulcerative colitis experience many side effects, including living with a colostomy pouch, but evidence now shows that female patients are also at risk for lower fertility.
A study in the January 2002 issue of the journal Gastroenterology shows women have lower fertility after restorative proctocolectomy (colectomy) for ulcerative colitis than before surgery.
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a condition that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the top layers of the lining of the large intestine. This condition affects more than 500,000 people in the US each year. The lowered fertility especially is of concern because most cases are diagnosed in patients in their early 30s.
Most patients with UC can be treated using drug therapy, but 25-40% of all patients will eventually require surgical removal of the colon by a colectomy.
