Volunteers placed 561 empty chairs in a parking lot near the Albuquerque Rape Crisis Center this morning, one chair for each person who came through the center's doors during 2001 seeking help as the victim of a sexual assault.
"This is also the highest number recorded since the Albuquerque Rape Crisis Center began collecting figures," spokeswoman Elena Giacci said at a morning news conference.
Victims ranged from a 1-year-old to a 96-year-old.
The center saw 466 men, women and children in 2000. In 2001 the number increased by more than 20 percent.
