Russia assumed a key role on the global stage this year. First there was its unexpectedly vigorous backing for US military action against Afghanistan in the wake of the 11 September attacks on New York and Washington. And then there was its central position in the confrontation between Opec and non-Opec producers over cuts in crude supply.
Russia's sympathy for the US after 11 September was not in itself surprising. For ordinary Russians, the attacks on America revived memories of the apartment bombings in Moscow and other cities in 1999.
