Community policing advocate Patricia Torn recently retired. Friends and colleagues say she will be missed around the neighborhood as they continue what she started.

Folks in the know used to say, "If you have problems with gangs or drugs in your neighborhood and want to take a stand, call Patricia Torn."

But no longer.

Torn, a 22-year city employee, retired last week as the neighborhood coordinator for community policing.

And, sadly, when governors and mayors talk about tightening our collective belts, it often means when someone retires, that position goes unfilled.

Torn said she wasn't certain her position would be filled because of budget cuts.
