Sorry to throw people a curve, but my tone this week is quite serious.

This is a humor column and I'm supposed to string together a few zany lines to get people to chuckle. Not this week I figure if people want a laugh they can go to a Bills game.

Why so serious? I have two reasons.

Reason No. 1: I went to a journalism workshop late last month and one of the exercises was to write a "gut-wrenching" personal essay and read it to others in the seminar. That particular session is still vivid in my mind because the unleashed emotions caused one person to leave in heaving sobs and another couldn't read her essay to us. This column is a version of what I wrote and read to a dozen people I will never see again. Now I want to give people I "know" - those who regularly read these inches - a glimpse into my heart.
