SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Resolving a long-standing dispute, the state BOARD OF EQUUALIZATION ruled that Indian tribes in California are not required to collect state and local sales taxes on purchases made in their restaurants. The taxes, which average 7.9 percent statewide, would represent an estimated $16 million on tribal restaurants' sales of about $200 million annually, the Associated Press reported.
