Going from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds is nothing to shout about when you're talking about sports cars, but when the vehicle is a sport/ute that tips the scales at 4824 pounds, that's a different story. Until Porsche unveils its Cayenne SUV later this year, BMW's X5 4.6is is the quickest ute on the block, besting Mercedes' ML55 AMG by three-tenths of a second to 60 mph.
While styling of the X5 4.6is differs subtly from the other two X5 models-the 3.0i and 4.4i-it is the huge 20-inch wheels and tires that dominate its appearance and tell you this is something more. Up front are W-rated 275/40R-20s; in back are 315/35R-20s. The alloy wheels reveal the massive brake rotors and calipers needed to bring all this mass to a halt. The 14-inch ventilated front rotors are the biggest brakes ever supplied on a factory BMW. For winter in snowy climates, BMW recommends fitting 18-inch wheels and snow tires.
