Michael Shumacher demostró una vez más que es imbatible cuando se sienta al mando de su Ferrari. Al concluir la temporada del 2001, se erige como el campeón absoluto de la serie más sofisticada del automovilismo mundial, con 58 puntos de diferencia sobre David Coulthard, ocupante del segundo lugar en el compeonato mundial de Fórmula 1.

Es tan evidente la superioridad de Schumacher, que logró establecerse como campeón de la temporada faltando cuatro fechas para el final. De estas cuatro carreras, Michael logró triunfar en dos, acumulando un total de 53 victorias personales, lo que lo convierte en el corredor con mayor cantidad de victorias de la historia de Fórmula 1. El único título que le falta conquistar es el de mayor cantidad de campeonatos mundiales ganados, que hasta la fecha lo tiene el legendario argentino Juan Manuel Fangio con 5, mientras que Schumacher tiene 4.

La carrera de Japón sirvió para dejar en claro la superioridad de Michael Schumacher, pero esto no lo pudo hacer solo; después de muchos años de problemas, Ferrari ha logrado por segundo año consecutivo, hacer que todo el equipo funcione tan perfecto como sus máquinas. La estabilidad en su desempeño, la rapidez de los servicios en los pits y la consistencia en el funcionamiento de los autos de Schumacher y Barrichello demuestran que como equipo han logrado aquel ansiado estado de harmonía y perfección.

Es evidente que para el 2002 Ferrari será el modelo a seguir para lograr la victoria en esta categoría.

La competitividad de la serie se observó en la disputa por el segundo lugar, que se realizó entre Rubens Barrichello, con el auto 2 de Ferrari y David Coulthard, de McLaren, quien estableció un buen ritmo de carrera en los primeros eventos de la temporada, pero otorgó muchas oportunidades de victoria al equipo BMW-Williams, tercer mejor equipo de la categoría. Ellos presentaron una gran presión en las últimas fechas del campeonato, al conquistar victorias y segundos lugares con sus dos representantes, Ralf Schumacher y Juan Pablo Montoya.
