Performance reviews can be the best or the worst discussion of the year.

When I work with companies on retention issues, I usually review exit interview data.

One of the most common refrains is, "I never got any constructive feedback, and my manager didn't even care enough about me to do a performance review."

Another common comment is, "My manager just went through the motions, checking off the boxes on my review."

Here's another beaut: "My manager asked me to do my own review, and he never even met with me. He just signed it and turned it in."
