BAD-GIRL REHAB
KILLER COCKTAIL?
Mixing energy drinks and alcohol might wreak havoc on your health.
Caffeine-and-booze blends are a growing trend at bars and parties...and a growing concern. Two young, healthy people died after reportedly consuming energy drinks mixed with alcohol. Manufacturers of the drinks say there is no connection to the deaths, but some doctors sense danger. Here's why you may want to think twice before trying this concoction:
Energy drink usually contain caffeine, a diuretic that speeds fluids through your body, increasing the dehydrating effects of alcohol. This can lead to feeling faint and dizzy, according to Gregory Stewart, M.D., co-medical director of the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Depending on how sensitive you are to caffeine, drinking too many of these cocktails could also raise your blood pressure or trigger potentially deadly heart reactions.
What's more caffeine can mask the fatigue that usually signals that you've had too much alcohol, possibly leading you to guzzle beyond a safe cutoff point.
