Paid family leave is a business issue. It is a big-business issue, a small-business issue and, particularly, a women's business issue. I am the CEO and founder of a small, nonprofit organization that employs 20 people and does not have the scale of a larger company that allows them to offer paid family- leave plans.

I am thankful that elected officials are offering legislation that will help my company "do well" and be competitive in the job market for skilled women of childbearing age, while "doing. good" and allowing new mothers and fathers to spend time at home with their infants.

The proposals that have been made by acting Gov. Jane Swift, House Speaker Thomas M. Finneran and Senate President Thorn F. Birmingham, contrary to popular belief, do not propose a new tax on employers, and none include any new mandates expanding he Family and Medical …
