2001 DEC 26 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- A batch of anthrax - the type mailed to government and media officials and suspected in several deaths - is being used in a research project at the University of New Mexico.

The project focuses on early detection of and vaccination against biowarfare agents, according to a copyright story in Thursday's Albuquerque Journal. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was aware that the university had the Ames strain of anthrax.

"We certainly are aware of the UNM involvement with the anthrax research, and it has not been problematic for us,'' FBI Supervisory Agent Doug Beldon said. "It has not presented any criminal problems for the FBI in New Mexico.''

He added that only a few laboratories nationwide have the anthrax strain.

Sam Giammo, spokesman for UNM's health sciences center, provided documents showing that at least one research project at the university is using anthrax. Giammo declined to give details because of security concerns. He also declined to discuss specific security measures or whether any infectious agents at UNM may be unaccounted for.

"Rigorous accounting mechanisms are in effect at all times,'' he said.
