"At present time, there is uncertainty regarding whether influenza-like illness in healthy adults is best managed by preventive efforts that use the trivalent influenza vaccine, administration of neuraminidase inhibitors at the onset of illness, or recommendation of supportive care alone at the onset of illness," explained Peter A. Muennig and colleagues at New School University's Robert J. Milano Graduate School and Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
Preventive vaccination was more cost-effective than either option for postinfection treatment, according to their report in the December 1 edition of the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
The neuraminidase inhibitor oseltamivir, which works by shutting down the activity of a viral coat protein, was considerably more cost-effective than supportive care alone. A public health strategy based on oseltamivir treatment would save more than US$27,000 dollars per quality-adjusted life year compared with the cost of supportive care, study data showed.
