You may have never visited White Bluff Resort in Whitney, but there is a pretty good chance you've been invited. The 3,45.0-acre development 75 miles south of Dallas is well-known for its direct-mail and telemarketing campaigns offering enticements such as free hotel stays to tour the resort.

The resort is on scenic Lake Whitney, but the original course, called The Old Course, makes little use of the scenery. The best topography and views are reserved for prime homesites. The only hole giving golfers a taste of the namesake bluffs is the 13th with a tee-box panorama so impressive you'll wish you had brought a camera.
