Championship seasons like the one Sam Hornish Jr. had in the Indy Racing League in 2001 are so infrequent they become unforgettable. Hornish captured his first major racing title, winning three races, posting an average finish of 3.38 in 13 starts and finishing a record 105 points ahead of his nearest competitor to become, at 22 years old, the youngest winner in Indy car history.
He won the season opener and the season finale. He won on flat tracks (Phoenix and Homestead) and on the high banks (Texas). He won by dominating (leading 140-plus laps in the first two races) and by slipping into the lead on the last lap (in the October race at Texas).
