The 2001 Toyota Atlantic Championship can be summarized with two words: Hoover Orsi. The 23-year-old Brazilian won the most poles (four) and the most races (five) and led the most laps. With nine podium finishes in the first 10 rounds, Orsi clinched Hylton Motorsports' first Atlantic championship with two of 12 races to go.
There were some highlights behind Orsi. Cagey veteran David Rutledge, competing in his fourth Atlantic season, had everyone covered on street circuits, winning from the pole in Long Beach, Toronto and Montreal, and finishing second to Orsi in the standings, 187 points to 131.
Joey Hand, a 22-year-old Atlantic rookie from Sacramento, California, closed the season with two wins and a second-place in the final three races, good for third in points. Fan-favorite Rocky Moran Jr. salvaged an otherwise difficult year with victory in the finale at Laguna Seca.
At this point, none of these drivers has been able to step up to the big leagues, and opportunities don't appear plentiful. CART's field is likely to shrink next season, and several 2001 CART drivers are looking for work. Orsi missed ...
