International Speedway Corp., the largest operator of racetracks in the country, has extended until January a feasibility study on a new track in the greater New York City area. ISC is working with the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority on the possibility of building a new racetrack near the Meadowlands in East Ruther- ford, New Jersey. ISC started the feasibility study nearly two years ago and extended it until January because of the events of Sept. 11.
Herta to F1?
Bryan Herta has met with Tom Walkinshaw to discuss a test in an Arrows Formula One car. The 31-year-old American currently has no CART ride for 2002, following Forsythe Championship Racing's withdrawal (AW, Nov. 26). The Orange Arrows team has not yet revealed its drivers for next season, though Red Bull sponsoring Enrique Bernoldi is a certainty. Herta's bid to partner with him could suit Red Bull, the Austrian-owned energy drink that plans a push in the U.S. market next year. Herta is also talking with Team Cheever about an IRL ride, and Eddie Cheever said he has a new deal with Walkinshaw, giving his team access to Arrows' technical facility in Leafield, U.K. The last American to compete in a Grand Prix car was Michael Andretti, who drove for McLaren in 1993.
