Kodak has catapulted into the top three wide-format ink-jet printer suppliers with the acquisition of Encad.

The move, which sees it take on Epson and Hewlett-Packard, is part of continuing consolidation in the wide-format market, and comes hot on the heels of Oce buying Gretag Imaging's professional division (Print Week, 16 November).

"It was a good opportunity to expand our presence in the market," said Kodak Professional marketing director Philip Cullimore.

The [pounds sterling]17.7m ($25m) deal, which Kodak will pay for in shares, should be completed early next year depending on shareholder and regulatory approval.
