Background Bonus
As many as 70 different types of fresh fruits and vegetables may be found in grocery stores. So it would be possible for everyone to eat the three to five servings of vegetables and two to four servings of fruit recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for good nutrition.
However, a 1993 survey by the National Cancer Institute revealed that relatively few Americans are eating the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables. The survey found that:
* 23 percent of Americans eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables;
* 35 percent eat four to five servings;
* 38 percent eat one to three servings;
* 4 percent eat fewer than one serving.
