Background Bonus
Being healthy doesn't mean being physically perfect. It means being the best one can be. As children accept who they are and their own uniqueness, they learn they are similar to some people and different from others. Unfortunately, differences often draw more attention than similarities. This can generate alienation from those who are different. Students should be helped to understand that most people are more alike than they are different. Students should also learn the positive results of caring and sharing. Respect for self is the basis for developing respect for others and accepting differences among people. Developing self-respect and respect for others is the goal of the activities in this unit.
Unit Objectives
Students learn to
* develop respect for themselves and others;
* understand their feelings and why they have them;
* appreciate the connection between being healthy and feeling good and being physically active.
