CHICAGO, Ill.--Anthony Mojica knew something was wrong shortly after he arrived at the Munoz house. Anthony came to the Munoz's each day to wait for the bus to take him to school. But that November morning, family members were staggering around in a daze. Then some started getting sick and passing out. "I was scared," says Anthony.
His heart raced, and his hands shook-common signs of the body's fight-or-flight response. In a fight-or-flight response, a chemical called adrenaline races throughout the body. Adrenaline prepares the body to either face the problem or run away. Anthony decided to face the problem.
He ran to a neighbor's house and asked the neighbor to call 9-1-1. Police soon rushed the entire Munoz family to the hospital. Anthony discovered later that the family had become sick from carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas, given off by a faulty heater. The police said if Anthony had not reacted as he had, the whole family might have died.
That morning, Anthony discovered he could handle a stressful situation.
