Background Bonus

Growing up means outgrowing old clothes and shoes and buying new ones. Americans discard 300 million pairs of shoes annually, which amounts to a lot of non-decomposed rubber. Nike has decided to help the environment by creating recycled products. The Reuse shoe program shreds and sorts old and/or defective shoes into two piles: a rubber pile and a fluff pile. The discards in the rubber pile are made into basketball courts and running tracks. The fluff pile gets recycled into mattresses or furniture stuffing. For a new track, your school would have to collect 30,000 pairs of shoes and for a basketball court, 40,000 pairs of shoes.
