Background Information

The wheel was invented 5,500 years ago in what is now Iraq. The first wheels were made of solid slices of trees, linked by wooden axles. In places where trees were sparse, people made wheels by joining wooden planks. Fifteen hundred years later, the spoked wheel was invented.

Since then, the wheel has been used to move things ranging from animal-powered carts to today's supertrains. The timeline to the right shows how wheels have enhanced people's lives.

1493

In Italy, Leonardo da Vinci designed the first bicycle.

1760

In Belgium, the first roller skates were made.
