Wedges are used to cut things or to split them apart. Look at the picture of the pushpin. The tip of the pushpin is pointed so that it can pierce paper, corkboard, or other things. The tip of the pushpin is a wedge. The top of the pushpin cannot cut through things. You need a wedge to do this.
