Rocks are made when changes take place inside Earth or on Earth's surface. Some rocks are formed deep inside Earth by heat and pressure.

Basalt

Others are formed by forces such as wind, water, and ice. Often, pieces of old rocks come together in new ways to form new rocks.

Basalt is an igneous rock. Igneous rocks are formed when melted, or molten, rock from deep inside Earth cools and hardens. Sometimes, igneous rocks shoot out of volcanoes.

Sandstone

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rocks form when layers of rock particles, or sediments, are pressed together to form new rocks.
