The moon is our closest neighbor in space. But it is very different from Earth. There is no air, water, or life of any kind on the moon.
The surface of the moon is covered with light and dark areas. The dark areas are called Maria. Maria are large, flat, and smooth. The light areas of the moon are the highlands.
The highlands are filled with mountains, valleys, and thousands of craters. Streak patterns can be seen near the craters. Some of the craters are large saucer-shaped holes; others are small pits.
