One of the worst storms of the century hit the East Coast in December 1992. Winds blew at hurricane force.
The worst part of the storm was the flooding. In New York, scuba divers rescued people trapped in their cars. In parts of New Jersey, boats cruised along the streets.
Weather experts say that the heavy flooding was caused by the immense amount of precipitation and because there was a total lunar eclipse on the day of the storm. A total lunar eclipse takes place when Earth moves directly between the moon and the sun. Extremely high tides occur when this happens. These extra-high tides made the flooding much worse.
The moon's gravitational pull causes tides on Earth.
