Diet programs are often advertised on TV and in magazines, but some diet programs aren't based on healthful eating. Young people whose bodies are still growing should base their eating habits on the recommendations of the daily food pyramid, not on a diet ad.

The food pyramid gives a range for the number of servings you should have each day from the different food groups. Where do you fit in that range? How many servings do you need? That depends on:

* your age--young people need more nutrients than adults because they are growing.

* your sex--boys seem to need more nutrients than girls.

* your height--two people the same age can differ a lot in height. It takes more nutrients to feed the taller person.

* your bone structure--small, medium, or large.

* your metabolism--the rate at which your body uses energy The rate is determined by your genetic makeup, but exercise seems to speed up the process.
