Steven Caldwell loved to play soccer. He practiced nearly every day after school and played a game every Saturday with his team, the Sonics. He was probably the best player on his team. He took control of the ball and dribbled, passed, and kicked goals with confidence. Scoring a goal gave him the best feeling he knew. Everything inside him shouted "Yes!" when the ball hit the other team's net. He was proud of himself.
Today the Sonics were playing the Comets, the toughest team in the league. Steven had been looking forward to this game all season, but now instead of feeling excited, he felt awful. His head ached, and he coughed frequently.
"I think you're coming down with a cold," his mother said. "You probably shouldn't play soccer today."
Steven knew he didn't have a cold. He had spent the night at Brad's house, and they had sniffed paint thinner to see what "getting high" felt like. He remembered feeling very dizzy and confused. He couldn't remember too much, and he wondered if he had passed out.
Now he had ruined all his hopes of scoring against the Comets. Everything inside him shouted "You idiot!" He was really ashamed of himself.
