Background Bonus

Fourth grade is a time when some students begin to test boundaries established by school, family, friends, and self. At school and at home, kids need to have a sense of being nurtured and cared for. A caring response from teachers can provide students with the guidance they need at a time when they want to explore. Author Katherine Levin suggests the following CARING advice: Care, when confronting an unwanted behavior; Ally with the child so that caring can go on; Review all factors involved in the behavior; Investigate possibilities of change; Negotiate a change; Go on caring. Students can develop responsibility and self-confidence when they know someone cares.

Unit objectives

Students learn to

* explore qualities that make them unique and special;

* examine how others perceive them;

* appreciate how important they are to others;
