Unit Objectives
Fat is a nutrient that all people, especially growing children, need. However, Americans tend to eat too much fat. Fat should be limited to 30 percent or less of total daily intake of calories.
Children may be unaware of their fat intake, because fats are hidden in so many foods. Although children can see the obvious fat on bacon or a piece of steak, they may not realize that potato chips and french fries are high in fat because of how they are cooked. Children also may not realize the amount of fat in whole milk, ice cream, and cheese. They may put doughnuts, cookies, and cake in the grains food group instead of the fat group.
Children needn't give up all treats with fat, but they should practice moderation and learn to substitute low-fat items for those high in fat.
