After Katie and Brian's father had a heart attack, a lot of things changed at their house. When the doctor told Mr. Reed that he would have to make major changes in his eating habits, the whole family decided to join in. Instead of fatty red meat and lunchmeats like bologna, they ate a lot of chicken and fish. Desserts were fresh fruit instead of ice cream and cake. They had low-fat cheese and low-fat milk. Lots of grains--bread, pasta, and whole-grain cereals--and fresh fruits and vegetables rounded out each meal. Although it was difficult at first, everyone got used to this new way of eating.
When It's Time for a Treat
Katie and Brian felt great knowing they were helping their dad get back on the road to health and helping themselves by developing healthful eating habits. But they still wanted some top-of-the pyramid foods. They talked with their parents, and the family decided that it's OK for kids to have a treat now and then.
Katie and Brian made a plan. They listed what they missed most and decided when they would be able to have them. They kept in mind that each treat would be only one serving--be it ice cream, cookies, or a burger and fries.
