A new way of thinking about healthful eating uses a shape from the ancient world. A pyramid is widest at its base to support the rest of the structure. You should eat more from the bread, cereal, rice, and pasta group at the base of the food pyramid and less from the food groups above.

Do you remember the kinds of nutrients in foods? They are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. Foods in the first two levels of the pyramid contain large amounts of carbohydrates. Foods in the third level contain large amounts of protein. Vitamins and minerals are found in various amounts throughout the first three levels. Fats are mainly found in the top two levels.

What's a Serving?

Look at the food pyramid. The servings listed are to be eaten every day. If you think that's impossible, you need to understand how much a serving is.

Food: 1 serving

Bread: 1 slice

Pasta and grains: 1/2 cup, cooked
