At your age, you probably have both primary and permanent teeth in your mouth. Take a look at the cross sections of a primary and a permanent tooth. What are some of the differences between them?
Each tooth is made up of several parts. The outer top of the tooth is the crown. A hard, white covering, called enamel, protects the inner parts of the tooth. Most of the inner tooth is dentin, a bonelike material. In the very center is a soft material called pulp. In the pulp are blood vessels and nerves. Roots hold the tooth in place in the jawbone.

If you broke one of your permanent teeth in an accident, it wouldn't grow back. But that doesn't mean you would lose your great smile. Your dentist might replace the tooth with a dental implant.
A dental implant looks like area tooth. It is really made of a very hard kind of clay attached to the jaw with a screw! When the implant is in place, it doesn't hurt. Even though the new tooth isn't real, it does the work of a real tooth. It will last for many years.

The longer a sugary food stays in your mouth, the more time it has to attack your teeth. Avoid sweets that dissolve in your mouth or stick to your teeth.
