When Lauren Minor was 11 years old, she went to Washington, D.C., to talk to members of Congress. The House of Representatives was considering a law that would ban smoking in public places. Lauren has asthma, a disease that can make breathing difficult. She told the members of Congress how hard it is for people with asthma to be anyplace where people smoke.
Tobacco Smoke
Tobacco smoke from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes hurts everyone who is around it. It hurts the person who is smoking the most, but it also hurts other adults and children who just breathe the smoke without touching the cigarette, cigar or pipe. The smoke can even hurt babies before they are born.
Tobacco smoke contain many chemicals, including nicotine, a drug that speeds up the heart so that it needs more oxygen. But the heart can't get the extra oxygen it needs because the smoke also hurts the lungs. The tiny air sacs in the lungs, through which oxygen passes into the blood (see diagram on page 3), are damaged by tobacco smoke. The lungs can't do their job as well.
