Responding to The Need
When you exercise, your muscles need more oxygen to use for energy. Your brain sends messages to your heart and lungs to provide more oxygen. If you run fast like Angela, you will find yourself breathing faster as your heart beats faster.
Your heart is a pump that sends blood through tubes called blood vessels to all parts of your body. In the blood are oxygen and nutrients that your body's cells need to live. Nutrients are things the body takes from food, such as water, vitamins, and minerals. Your heart beats all day and all night to supply your body's cells with the things they need. Your heart beats faster when you exercise and slower when you rest and sleep.
The Color of Things
The blood coming from your lungs is bright red from the oxygen in it. This blood flows into the left side of the heart and is then pumped out to the rest of your body. After your cells use the oxygen in the blood, the blood turns dark red. This dark red blood flows back into the right side of the heart and then is pumped to the lungs for a refill of oxygen.
FAST FACT
* Your heart beats more than 100,000 times each day.
