Breathe In, Breathe Out
When you breathe in through your mouth or nose, air rushes in and goes down the throat to your lungs. The lungs look like two pink spongy bags. They are protected by your ribs.
Oxygen is in the air you breathe. The cells of your body need oxygen to live. Oxygen must get from your lungs to all your cells. The oxygen passes through the walls of tiny air sacs in your lungs to the blood. (See diagram on page 3.) The heart pumps the blood to all parts of the body.
After the cells use oxygen, they release into the blood a waste product called carbon dioxide. The blood with the carbon dioxide goes back to the heart, and the heart pumps the blood to the lungs. The carbon dioxide leaves the body as you breathe out.
How Pollution Affects You
