Environmental and genetic factors may have more effect on health than daily lifestyle choices. Because genetic factors and some environmental factors are usually beyond individual control, it is especially important to help students develop the practice of making choices that contribute to wellness.
An underlying theme in good lifestyle choices is self-esteem, an honest acceptance of one's strengths and recognition of one's limitations. There are several facets to developing self-esteem. Respect for oneself and others is a cornerstone of self-esteem. Focusing on positive thoughts is another key element. Finally, in order to maintain self-esteem, an individual must develop the ability to respond positively even to negative life circumstances that are beyond control.
Unit Objectives
Students learn to
* understand the causes of emotions--their own and those of others;
* identify their own personal strengths and accomplishments;
