Second-hand smoke is a serious threat to a child's health. An estimated 9 million children regularly breathe second-hand smoke, usually at home. Breathing second-hand smoke increases the risk of developing asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
Second-hand smoke also increases both the number of ear infections a child will have and the length of illnesses resulting from those ear infections. Second-hand smoke can cause a buildup of fluid in the middle ear, leading to the most common cause of surgery for children.
The Congressional House subcommittee on health and environment has held several hearings on a bill that would ban smoking in all public places. If passed, the "Smokefree Environment Act" would prohibit smoking in any nonresidential building that is entered by 10 or more people during the course of a typical week
