Background Bonus

Good hygiene practices and a healthful lifestyle help keep the body well. The body also has a built-in defense system to help prevent illness. Playing a key role in the defense system are white cells in the blood that destroy bacteria and viruses invading the body.

Antibodies are another line of defense against disease. Antibodies are chemicals produced when a germ or a virus enters the body. An antibody attaches itself to the invader, making it harmless. The invader then can be destroyed by a white blood cell.

Antibiotics also help the body fight disease. Antibiotics are chemicals created by fungi and some germs. These chemicals can be used to kill harmful germs. Antibiotics are grown in a laboratory and used as medicines. They can be taken by a person whose body needs additional help in fighting illness.
