A Musician Who Cannot Hear

Evelyn Glennie is a percussionist. That means she plays instruments such as drums, cymbals, bells, and wood blocks. She plays with an orchestra, but she can't hear the music. Glennie has been deaf since she was 12.

Glennie uses her sense of touch to feel the vibrations from her instruments. She performs barefoot to feel the vibrations with her feet as well as her hands.

"People have the wrong idea about deafness," says Glennie. "They think you live in a world of total silence, but that isn't the way it works. I don't think [of sounds] in terms of loud and soft. Instead I think of sounds as thin or fat, strong or weak."

Glennie travels around the world playing music for people to enjoy.

Loss of Sense
