Millions of people in the United States go to the movies every week. You may be one of them. At the movies, your eyes see the pictures on the screen. You hear the words and music with your ears. You smell the popcorn with your nose, and taste it with your tongue. You feel the chair cushion against your skin. You use your five senses. They help you to see, hear, smell, taste, and touch.
Your senses help you learn about the things around you. Messages from your senses are sent to your brain. Your brain is like a busy telephone system. It gets millions of messages, and then it sends messages to parts of your body. The messages help you understand what you are seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching.
Experiments for Your Senses
Work in small groups.
Smell: For this experiment, you will need pieces of various foods. Use an apple, orange, a cookie, a slice of bread, and a carrot.
Blindfold a classmate without letting the person see the foods. Put a piece of food on a plate. Have the person smell the piece of food and guess what food it is.
