Most people see homes as a safe place. Yet safety experts report many accidents happen at home.
Angela Weaver knows about home accidents. She was baby-sitting for her neighbor's children when the little girl choked on gum. "She put her hands on her throat and couldn't talk. She fell down to the floor," Angela says. "I did the Heimlich maneuver on her. It didn't work until the third time. The gum flew across the room, and she started crying. I calmed her down, and then she was fine."
Angela learned to do the Heimlich maneuver, called the "hug of life," at a Safe Sitter class. The class teaches young people to be ready in case of an accident. Angela was named Safe Sitter of the Year for having saved the little girl's life.
