Background Information
When a ship traveling from Korea to the Pacific Northwest was hit by a severe storm in May 1990, 80,000 sneakers were dumped overboard. Six months later, the sneakers began to wash up on the beaches of Washington State and Vancouver Island. Local beachcombers were delighted with the discovery and found the sneakers wearable after a little cleaning. A year after the spill took place, two scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration decided to use the incident to measure Pacific Ocean currents. After contacting beachcombers in Oregon, Washington, and Canada, the scientists were able to learn where and when the sneakers had washed ashore. After fine-tuning the data on their computers, the scientists were able to predict that the sneakers' next port of call will be Asia.
