Background Information
When the Mars Environmental Survey spacecraft lands on Mars in 1997, it will be carrying a pack of Rockys, microrovers (robots) that look like toy dump trucks. These Rocky robots will chip at rocks with tiny picks, scoop tip the rock samples, and bring them home. Rockys will even carry around pint-sized seismometers and spectrometers that will bombard rocks with protons and analyze them, using the X rays that come bouncing out. NASA scientists aren't sure yet that Rockys can do the job. The cold Martian nights might crack their bodies and damage their circuits. There's still time, though, for scientists to correct this potential defect before launch.
Unit Concepts: Students learn about the benefits of space explorations of Mars and other planets and future human space colonies.
The activities listed below suggest ways of presenting and enriching the content and skills in Unit 3. The activities correspond to days 11 through 15 on the page 2 calendar matrix.
ALIENS AND EARTHLINGS
Ask students to compare real space explorations with those in science fiction stories such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Wars. Record responses on a chart.
