An ocean's surface currents are caused by winds. Some surface currents are warm water currents. Many of these form near the equator. Scientists have observed deep currents flowing for beneath an ocean's surface. These are cold water currents. They form mainly in the cold waters of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Generally, worm water currents flow more swiftly than cold water currents do.

Find the Gulf Stream on the map of Earth's ocean currents. That warm water surface current is very important to people who live near coastlines that border the Atlantic Ocean. The Gulf Stream affects weather in these areas and the supply of available fish.
