Tsunamis are dramatic examples of movement in the seas. There are more common movements of ocean water that occur all the time. Tides are the movement of all the oceans' waters caused by the gravitational attraction between Earth and its moon. Since the moon is constantly changing its position as it revolves around Earth, the waters in our oceans rise and fall, causing high and low tides.

There are other massive movements of water that occur all the time under and on the ocean's surface, independent of the tides. These movements of water are like huge rivers running in many different directions along the ocean's surface and under it. These are the oceans' currents.
