As Earth travels around the sun, it leans, or tilts. Sometimes it is leaning toward the sun and sometimes it is leaning away from the sun.
The part of Earth that is tilting toward the sun is warm. It is summer. The part that is tilting away from the sun is cold. It is winter.
How do you feel when you play outside on a very hot day? What happens when you stand or sit under a shady tree?
Imagine keeping the top half of your body in the shade and the bottom half of your body in the sun. How would the top half of your body feel?
Seasons are caused by the tilt of Earth as it revolves around the sun.
June 20 or 21 is the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
September 20 or 21 is the first day of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.
