Toss a stone into a still pond. What happens? A series of little waves travel outward in circles that grow larger and larger as they move farther and farther away from the center.

If you could see sound moving through the air, it would look like that. Sound waves start with a vibration. These waves start moving outward in all directions. If you could see them, they would look like the waves in the pond.

Sound travels in waves. Sound can travel through solids and liquids.
