People can be brought together without actually being moved from one place to another. How? Through the sharing of ideas and images. Technologies that help move ideas can be simple--pen and some paper, for example. Or they can be complex, like the newest high-speed computers.

Mass communication--the ability to send a message to many people at once--started slowly, with the newspaper. Today, satellites can beam images and words around the world in a split second.

How have communications changed in just the 20th century?

The photo at left and the photo on page 28 show the change in communications--from daily newspapers in the early part of the century to TV news in the 1990s. Below are two paragraphs that describe two different earthquakes in San Francisco, California-one in 1906, the other in 1989. Read the paragraphs, then answer the questions.
